In the early days, the area was inhabited by the Caddo, Wichita, and Tonkawa Indians. The area was part of the Peters Colony Grant, one of four land grants issued by the Republic of Texas. The early settlers came to Carrollton to establish a settlement. At the time, the settlers were mostly nomadic and had relatively small homes, averaging 168 square feet. In the early days, Carrollton was an agricultural community. In 1846, David Myers founded the first Baptist church in Dallas County. In 1856, he built the first community school. In 1878, an unfinished railroad was platted, connecting the area to Denton. By 1880, the railway had reached Denton and expanded to Carrollton. By 1888, the population reached 150.
The city’s educational system is comprised of public and private schools. Carrollton has a handful of top-rated schools. Among these are Arbor Creek Middle School, Country Place Elementary School, and McCoy Elementary School. The Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District operates these schools.
