The town was originally settled by the Caddo, Wichita, and Tonkawa Indians. In 1844, the city was part of the Peters Colony Grant, which was made to the Republic of Texas. Hundreds of settlers eventually came to the area and built a town on it. The early settlers were mostly nomadic and lived in small homes.
